EXPLORING THE OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES OF DC ELECTRICITY, ITDA 2024 PUBLIC LECTURE BY PROF. TAUFIK

On Thursday, June 6, 2024, at the Husein Sastranegara Hall, a public lecture was delivered by Prof. Taufik, a Professor of Electrical Engineering from California Polytechnic State University, United States. The lecture, which was opened by the Rector of ITD Adisutjipto, Air Vice Marshal Dr. Ir. Arwin Datumaya Wahyudi Sumari, S.T., M.T., IPU, ASEAN Eng., ACPE, APEC Eng., was part of a series of academic activities aimed at broadening knowledge in the field of electrical engineering, particularly in the use of direct current (DC) electricity.

Prof. Taufik, who is also the Director of the Electric Power Institute at the university, presented a topic titled "The Renaissance of DC Electricity: Challenges and Opportunities." In this lecture, he discussed the history, advantages, and challenges of using DC electricity compared to alternating current (AC). Prof. Taufik explained that although AC is currently more commonly used in power distribution, DC offers several significant advantages, especially for low-power and portable applications, as well as for more efficient long-distance power transmission. Key points presented included the history of DC electricity, the advantages and disadvantages of DC electricity, the increasing interest in DC electricity, and the opportunities and challenges of using DC electricity in various fields. Prof. Taufik also emphasized the importance of educating the younger generation, policymakers, and the industrial sector about the great potential of DC electricity in the future, and Indonesia's readiness to become a world leader in DC power system technology.

The public lecture, attended by students, lecturers, and electrical engineering practitioners both online and offline, demonstrated high enthusiasm through interactive Q&A sessions and in-depth discussions on various technical and practical aspects of DC electricity. Prof. Taufik's lecture successfully provided a comprehensive understanding of the renaissance of DC electricity and opened up opportunities for further innovation and research. This event is expected to inspire students and electrical engineering practitioners to continue developing and utilizing DC electricity technology for a more efficient and environmentally friendly future.
