RECTOR OF ITD ADISUTJIPTO PRESENTS BLACK FLIGHT IDENTIFICATION USING MACHINE LEARNING RESEARCH AT ISI'23 INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE IN BANGALORE, INDIA

Rector of ITD Adisutjipto, Air Marshal First Class TNI Dr. Ir. Arwin Datumaya Wahyudi Sumari, S.T., M.T., IPU, ASEAN Eng., ACPE, APEC Eng., along with the team, received appreciation for presenting one of their research outcomes titled "A Handy Simulated Radar Interface for Black Flight Identification System" at the 8th International Symposium on Intelligent Informatics 2023 (ISI’23). The symposium was part of the 6th International Conference on Applied Soft Computing and Communication Networks (ACN'23) held in Bangalore, India, from December 18 to 20, 2023, with participants from 39 countries. The conference was organized by PES University, supported by IEEE Signal Processing Society Bangalore Chapter, IEEE Communication Society Bangalore Chapter, Springer, IOS Press, and Taylor & Francis. During this event, the Rector of ITD Adisutjipto was the only participant from Indonesia.

The scientific article presented was the result of collaborative research across universities, faculties, departments, and study programs, supported by industry partners. Rector ITD Adisutjipto, as the Head of the Research Team, was supported by Dr.Eng. Ir. Rosa Andrie Asmara, S.T., M.T., Ir. Ika Noer Syamsiana, S.T., M.T., Ph.D., IPU, ASEAN Eng., and Dimas Rossiawan Hendra Putra, S.Tr.T., M.Tr.T. (Polytechnic State of Malang), Colonel Czi Helda Risman, M.Han. (University of Defense), and Astika Ayuningtyas, S.Kom., M.Kom. (ITD Adisutjipto) with support from industry partner, PT. Republik Defence, which provided in-kind support. The scientific article is one of the outputs of the Vocational Product Research Scheme (P2V) and received grant funding from the Directorate of Academic Vocational Education (DAPTV), Directorate General of Vocational Education Ministry of Education and Culture for the year 2023, entitled "Intelligent Air Defense Recommender System (IADRS) using Radar Cross Section Data." This multi-year research, initiated in 2022, is planned to be completed in 2024.

The main idea behind this research arose from observations of the weaknesses in military Radar systems that couldn't recognize and identify an airborne object that was detected but had disabled its Identification Friend or Foe (IFF) system, known as a black flight. The approach taken was to combine speed data and Radar Cross Section (RCS) data as inputs for an Artificial Intelligence (AI) system with a selected machine learning model to make predictions. The results of recognition and identification predictions gave the National Air Operations Command high confidence to order the scrambling of fighter aircraft with higher or equivalent capabilities to intercept the black flight object. To facilitate field personnel in operating IADRS, a lightweight and easy-to-operate interface was developed, making it operable on currently available computer systems. IADRS received positive feedback from Radar specialist officers who were asked to provide input and suggestions.

This collaborative research is a significant step towards internationalizing ITD Adisutjipto, improving the Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) of all involved universities, and building a broad network of researchers both domestically and internationally. The scientific article authored by Rector ITD Adisutjipto and the team will be published in the Smart Innovation, Systems, and Technologies Series by Springer, and indexed by SCOPUS, EI Compendex, INSPEC, WTI Frankfurt eG, zbMATH, Japanese Science and Technology Agency (JST), SCImago, and DBLP. The proceedings will be available in the SpringerLink digital library.
